## Summary

The European Commission placed FRMCS on the InnoTrans 2026 agenda. Its programme identifies September 2027 as the target for completing the specifications and their testing.

A dedicated session on FRMCS preparation was scheduled for 24 September. The programme outlined discussions on development progress, pre-deployment priorities and industry readiness, informed by a sector-wide questionnaire. Migration options to FRMCS-compatible ETCS versions were another focus.

## Implications for Railway Undertakings and Suppliers

Editorial perspective: Communications and ETCS roadmaps should be considered together. Three questions follow for project planning:

- What dependencies exist between planned ETCS versions and FRMCS?
- Which preparations should already be included in procurement and renewal programmes?
- What evidence will be needed for testing and migration?

September 2027 is a planning target, not a binding deployment date for individual railway networks. This article draws on the published programme; it does not establish the session's outcomes or decisions.
