Independent reference on the Future Railway Mobile Communication System

Industry & suppliers

FRMCS suppliers and their roles

Orientation across the industry actors documented in the underlying research: network vendors, railway technology companies, software providers and component manufacturers — with their evidenced contributions, without deriving delivery capability, approval or full FRMCS conformance.

The functional grouping is an editorial orientation, not a formal mapping of all products to the FRMCS reference architecture. Project participations, product announcements and interoperability tests carry different evidential weight. For supplier selection, the concrete product, its development stage and the supported specifications are decisive.

Central suppliers and their documented contributions

This selection summarises the central industry actors of the research. The roles describe the evidenced excerpt, not the complete company portfolio.

Further network vendors

For international offerings, the specification context is particularly important: a solution marketed as FRMCS or 5G-R is not, by that designation alone, demonstrably compliant with all European FRMCS requirements.

What do MORANE-2 and the ETSI Plugtests evidence?

MORANE-2 participation documents involvement in a European FRMCS validation project. It can indicate technical priorities and integration work. A concrete commercial scope of supply can only be derived where it is described separately.

ETSI Plugtests participation documents involvement in an interoperability testing event. What matters are the functions actually tested, the implementations involved and the respective test results.

In the report of the fifth FRMCS Plugtests, ETSI explicitly clarifies: the event served interoperability testing; no products were certified. A successful test is therefore not blanket proof of full FRMCS conformance.

What matters when assessing suppliers

For a robust assessment, every supplier should be examined against the same questions. These criteria make offerings comparable and show where additional evidence is required.

  1. 01

Which function does the company deliver itself?

Own product, integrated partner solution and system responsibility should be distinguishable.

  2. 02

Which specifications is the solution based on?

Concrete versions and supported functions are what matter.

  3. 03

    Which product stage is available?

Announcement, prototype, pilot installation and deliverable series product are separate development stages.

  4. 04

    Which interoperability is evidenced?

Frequently asked questions

Is every MCX provider also an FRMCS system provider?

MCX is an essential building block for mission-critical communication. However, an MCX offering alone does not prove that a company covers all railway-specific functions, interfaces and integration services of an FRMCS system. The specific offering must be examined.

Is participation in MORANE-2 proof of delivery capability?

It evidences a project role. Whether a specific product is already deliverable, which functions it supports and which evidence exists must be determined separately.

Is this overview complete?

The overview reflects the publicly evidenced supplier roles of the underlying research. It is not a globally complete supplier list and contains no ranking by market share, product maturity or capability.

Sources and methodology

Basis is the research “FRMCS Unternehmen und Organisationen im Überblick”, revised version of 30 September 2026. It combines vendor profiles, project lists, test reports and manufacturer publications. Manufacturer statements are classified as statements of the respective company; historical project participations are not automatically carried forward as a current supplier role.
