From GSM-R to FRMCS: final case
Time: about 9–12 minutes including the task; estimate
Guiding question: How is communication renewed while railway operations continue?
Learning objective: You explain a mixed-system map including migration and interworking.
Prerequisites: Previous lessons through 1.9, particularly the case file developed there.
An explicitly later trial configuration
So far we have planned the renewal. Now, for a later test, assume that train 1234 has FRMCS equipment. Lea remains our driver and Niko continues working in Talstadt. Other vehicles still use GSM-R. The assumed equipment has changed, not automatically the entire operation.
Migration is the planned transition from the existing system to the new one. It includes coordinated changes so that required tasks can also be performed in intermediate states. This involves vehicles, route coverage, counterparts, staff and procedures.
Coexistence means GSM-R and FRMCS exist alongside each other. Initially this establishes only that both systems are present. Interworking means they work together for defined communication tasks. Mixed voice communication, for example, requires suitable mapping between the systems. Supported functions must be specified and demonstrated separately. [S07, S11]
One pilot does not solve every task
| Area | Transition question |
|---|---|
| Vehicles | Which variant has which equipment? |
| Route | Where is each required service available? |
| Control centre | Which partners and functions must Niko reach? |
| Operations | Who owns transitions, incidents and recovery? |
| Applications | Which interfaces and performance conditions remain necessary? |
A successful ordinary call with train 1234 at the station again provides partial evidence. It does not test the mixed group, the tunnel, all vehicle variants or the measurement application. A network connection also does not prove correct role addressing and priority handling.
Interworking can support particular transition tasks. It does not demonstrate that every application works unchanged across both systems. Continuing a voice function and migrating an ETCS connection are different tasks.
Check your understanding
Two networks are present. Lea can call Niko over FRMCS. A GSM-R vehicle has not yet been included. Does this prove interworking? Name two further prerequisites for the intended mixed operation.
Model answer
No. So far, only coexistence and the individual FRMCS exchange have been demonstrated. Mixed operation still needs, for example, a test of supported communication across the system boundary with correct identities, plus suitable operational and incident procedures. Other relevant points include recipients, priority, route coverage and coverage of vehicle variants.
What to remember
- Migration includes technical and organisational intermediate states.
- Coexistence does not prove interworking.
- Each operational scope needs appropriate evidence.
Your Talbahn case file
Mark the existing system, planned changes and assumed pilot configuration separately. Record the remaining evidence gaps. The status overview supplies the external planning context; it does not replace pilot evidence. Status and timeline
Level 1 assessment: explain the overall picture
Explain Talbahn to a new colleague in about five minutes, using your system map. Identify the conversation and measurement transfer with both partners. Then explain: why is reception insufficient? What distinguishes GSM-R from EIRENE? Why is FRMCS being prepared? How do application, service and transport relate? How does communication differ from ETCS and ATO? Why does migration require more than new train equipment?
Model solution for the level assessment
Lea reports a delay to Niko from train 1234. The measurement application sends temperature data to the Talstadt workshop. Both need correct counterparts and a suitable connection. GSM-R provides existing communication; EIRENE describes important requirements. FRMCS is the intended successor. The change serves both long-term preservation and possible improvements, whose benefits need separate evidence.
The railway application fulfils the purpose, the service provides the form of exchange, and transport carries data. ETCS supervises permitted running conditions; ATO automates specified driving tasks. Communication supports these applications but does not replace them. During migration, vehicles, network, counterparts and operations must fit together. Networks existing alongside each other do not yet prove interworking.
When Lea hands over to Amir, the driver role for train 1234 continues, but its current assignment changes. The same device therefore does not prove the same responsible person. A requirement describes the needed behaviour; implementation must realise it and an appropriate test must demonstrate fulfilment. Data rate describes the amount transferred per unit of time, latency the delay between defined points, and availability usability under required conditions. None of these properties replaces the others.
Self-assessment and revision
Score eight aspects with 0 for missing, 1 for partial and 2 for an understandable explanation with an example: communication partners; person/role/device; requirements/implementation/evidence; replacement need/additional benefit; architecture boundary; data rate/latency/availability; ETCS/ATO distinction; migration/interworking. A score of at least 13 out of 16 indicates a well-completed exercise. If you confuse role with device, the system boundary or train protection, revisit 1.2, 1.5 or 1.7 respectively, regardless of the total.
Level 2 builds on this map and turns the tasks into concrete functional and communication flows.
